There may be asbestos dust on these components, which can be dangerous if you touch or breath it. Wear an approved filter mask and gloves. Never use compressed air or a dry brush to clean brake components. Dust maybe removed using an industrial-type vacuum cleaner. Clean dust or mud away from broke components with water and a wet, soft brush or cloth. Failure to follow this warning may result in serious illness or death to personnel. Inspect stud holes (2) for cracks (3). Discard brakedrum (1) if cracks are present. inspect braking surface (6) for cracks (3), heat checking (4), and scoring (5). Reface braking surface if damaged (subpara b). 5-1
