i. Replace. The act of substituting a serviceable like-type part, sub-
assembly, module (component or assembly) in a manner to allow the proper
functioning of an equipment/system.
j. Service. Operations required periodically to keep an item in proper
operating condition, i. e., to clean, preserve, drain, paint, or to replenish
fuel/lubricants/hydraulic fluids or compressed air supplies.
k. Test. To verify serviceability and to detect incipient failure by
measuring the mechanical or electrical characteristics of an item and comparing
those characteristics with prescribed standards.
1. Symbols . The uppercase letter placed in the appropriate column indi-
cates the lowest level at which that particular maintenance function is to
be performed.
B-3. Explanation of Format. Purpose and use of the format are as follows,
and shall be explained in the introductory portion of the MAC.
a. Column 1. Group number. Column 1 lists group numbers, the purpose of
which is to match components, assemblies, subassemblies and modules with the
next higher assembly.
b. Column 2. Functional group. Column 2 lists the next higher assembly
group and the item names of components, assemblies, subassemblies and modules
within the group for which maintenance is authorized.
c. Column 3. Maintenance function. Column 3 lists the twelve maintenance
functions defined in B-2 above. Each maintenance function required for an
item shall be specified by the symbol among those listed in d below which
indicates the level responsible for the required maintenance. Under this
symbol there shall be listed an appropriate work measurement time value
determined as indicated in e below.
d. Use of symbols. The following symbols shall be used to prescribe work
function responsibility:
